"Learn a new language and get a new soul." -Proverb
¡Bienvenidos al Español!
The main goal of our class is communication in the Spanish language. We will also explore Spanish-speaking and other world cultures, and opportunities to use the language to connect to the world around us.
Our Curriculum
Spanish is offered in the sixth, seventh, and eighth grade years at York Middle School.
In sixth grade, students will experience six weeks of the language through activities and games that introduce the sounds and beginning structures. Sixth grade students will also begin to explore the Spanish-speaking world.
In the seventh and eighth grade years, students move through level one of the language within eight thematic units. Our units include life at school, families, food and restaurants, clothing and shopping, and vacations and travel, among others. We also learn about Spanish life, holidays, and cultures around the globe. Our classes are supported through a wide variety of authentic resources, including audio clips and literary works. One of the most powerful ways to acquire a new language is through stories and narrative!
Proficiency-Based Language Learning
Our language classes embody the proficiency-based learning model of education.
Our units are designed to measure a students' language skills and proficiency through individualized learning targets. Our learning targets are designed to guide our successful academic achievement in the ACTFL Linguofolio Graduation Standards. Both our World Language Standards and our lesson learning targets can be easily found posted in our classroom everyday. If you have any questions about proficiency-based learning in the Spanish classroom, I would be happy to chat with you anytime!
Our Classroom Community
Learning a new language is an adventure, and I hope to create excitement in our classroom. However, in order for our class activities to be effective and meaningful, everyone must feel comfortable in our learning community. Our Spanish community will be built on respect for each other, and will embody the core principles of our school. As members of this community, we will all exhibit strong habits of work and learning (Howls), and will put forth 100% effort at all times. These principles and habits should be illustrated in our atmosphere, our work ethic, and our actions.
Measuring Our Progress
In order to meet a standard, students are asked to consistently show proficiency in various language skills. Our standards and achievement, as well as our Howls, are reported regularly through PowerTeacher Gradebook Pro. The tool illustrates a student exceeding a standard, meeting it, progressing towards it, or not providing evidence to show achievement.
Students will show proficiency in our standards through a wide variety of teacher and student designed lessons, activities, and projects. As learning is individualized, our classes will be too!
Our Adventure
Learning a new language is a thrill and a challenge. If you need any help or have any questions at all, please contact me or stop by my classroom anytime. I am available after school Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays until 2:30 in room 3109, and I am always happy to help. I can be reached by email at [email protected], by phone at (207) 363-4214 ext. 3109, and in my class throughout the day.
I am looking forward to a wonderful year!
